One of the primary ways to participate at Mass is through singing. Singing is a “necessary or integral part of the liturgy.” (GIRM 393) The beauty of singing is the blending of all different voices, regardless of talent, into one voice of praise to God. Whether it be with one of our choirs, as a cantor, or as a person in the pew, singing is one thing that all can participate in at Mass.
Children’s Choir Program
The children’s choir program at Holy Family exists primarily to prepare our students to be ministers of music — to lead the congregation in prayerful song during liturgy. The choristers are introduced to the Word of God in scriptural readings and prayers leading to prayerful song responses in hymns, anthems, and other liturgical music. Secondly, we hope to carefully guide the vocal and musical development of our singers. Thirdly, we wish to build a community of singers who “love to sing for the Lord” and each other. Singing with a joyful heart is the hallmark of these choirs.
- The Children’s Choir is for students in third grade and meets on Thursdays from 3:00–4:15 p.m.
- The Junior Choir is for students in grades four and five and rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:25–3:00 p.m.
- The Cantor Singers is for students in grades six, seven, and eight. They practice on Thursdays at 11:40 a.m.
Contact Mrs. Flaherty at Holy Family School (398-5331) or the Music Ministry Office (398-4284) for more information.
Traditional Choir
“Praising God through song” could be the motto of this group. The traditional choir consists of men and women, young and old who love to sing their praises to God. They enhance the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass with their wide repertoire of liturgical music from polyphonic chant to contemporary compositions. This group rehearses on Wednesday evening from 7:00–8:30 p.m. If you enjoy singing and would like to join us, or need more information, call John Summers at the Harte Center (398-4284).
Contemporary Ensemble
This group will have you dancing in the pews as they lead the congregation in song at the 11:00 a.m. Sunday Mass. The ensemble consists of singers, both men and women, and instrumentalists — guitars, drums, etc. They rehearse on Tuesdays from 7:00–8:30 p.m. Call John Summers at the Harte Center (398-4284) for more information.
Cantors
“Sing with joy to God! Sing to God our help!” (Ps. 81) That is the job of our cantors, who lead the congregation in song at Mass. Students and adults are invited to contact John Summers at the Harte Center (398-4284) if you are interested in cantoring.
