HOMEWORK POLICY
IMPORTANT
PLEASE READ!!
Dear Parents,
We have written this letter in hopes of answering some questions regarding
homework assigned in my classroom. Please read this letter, discuss
it with your child, sign the bottom portion, and return it with your signature.
Why do we assign homework? We believe homework is important because
it is a valuable tool in helping students make the most of their experience
in school. Homework helps reinforce what has been learned in class,
prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps
students develop positive study habits.
When will homework be assigned? Homework will be assigned daily in
most subjects. Students will have class time to begin working on the
assignment in case there are questions. Students should keep a library
book with them at school each day for Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) and should
spend time reading each night. Students will also be expected to complete
the assigned number of accelerated reader points each quarter.
1st quarter- 10 A.R. points
2nd quarter- 10 A.R. points and one book report
3rd quarter- 15 A.R. points and one book report
4th quarter- 20 A.R. points and one book report
What are your child’s homework responsibilities? We expect each student
to have an assignment notebook, and record daily assignments as they are given.
We expect students to do their best job on each homework assignment.
We expect homework to be neat, not sloppy. All written work, except
math, should be done in cursive, and using an ink pen. We expect homework
to be completely finished by class time the following morning.
What are a parent’s homework responsibilities? Parents are the key
to making homework a positive experience for their children. Therefore,
we ask that you make homework a top priority at home. Please provide
necessary supplies and a quiet homework environment. Set aside a time
every day when homework should be done. Provide praise and support.
Do not allow your child to avoid doing homework. Please contact me if
you notice a problem.
What will happen if students do not complete their homework assignments?
If students choose not to do their homework, We will send a homework notice
home for each missing assignment. The homework notice should be signed
by a parent and returned with the completed assignment the next day.
The student will be issued a demerit for failure to return these items.
The grade will be lowered each day it is late. If a student still chooses
not to complete homework, We will ask that parents begin checking and signing
completed homework each night. If missing or incomplete homework continues
to be a problem, a conference will be requested.
What about legitimate reasons for a student not completing a homework assignment?
If there is a legitimate reason why a student is unable to finish an
assignment, please send a signed note to me on the date the homework is due,
explaining the reason it was not completed.
Graded student work will be sent home in a Friday homework folder.
Please sign the folder and return it to school on the first day of the following
week. We ask that you keep your student’s work for the entire quarter.
There have been times when a paper has gone home accidentally, and needs to
be returned for the grade to be recorded. We also recommend that parents
not “clean out” their student’s trapper/backpack. What appears to be
garbage to Mom or Dad may actually be a work in progress.
Please ask your child to review this homework plan with you, and then sign
and return the form below.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Christensen

DISCIPLINE PLAN
IMPORTANT
PLEASE READ
We are delighted that your child will be in our class this year. With
your encouragement, your child will be a part of many exciting and rewarding
experiences this academic year.
Since lifelong success depends in part on self-discipline, we have developed
a Classroom Discipline Plan which affords every student guidance in making
good decisions about their behavior and thus an opportunity to learn in a
positive, nurturing class environment. Your child deserves the most
positive educational climate possible for his/her growth, and we know that,
together, we will make a difference in this process. The plan below
outlines our classroom rules, possible rewards and consequences for appropriate
and inappropriate behavior.
Classroom Rules:
1. Respect the rights of others by talking one at a time and raising
hands to speak.
2. Be prepared for class by arriving on time with supplies.
3. Assignments must be completed on time. (See homework policy)
4. Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
5. Listen carefully and follow directions.
6. Be honest, use manners, and always do your best.
Playground Rules:
1. No rough, physical contact.
2. Play in designated areas only, following directions
of supervisors.
3. Do not play games that are dangerous.
4. Throw nothing on the playground except authorized playground
equipment designated to be thrown.
If a student chooses to break a rule, the following steps will be taken:
1st consequence: Child’s name on the board (warning).
2nd consequence: One check mark after name, resulting in a demerit being
issued.
3rd consequence: Two check marks after name, resulting in a 15 minute
detention.
An immediate demerit will be issued to any student who causes a severe disruption
or shows inappropriate behavior in the classroom. Demerits will be issued
for inappropriate behavior on the playground or in the cafeteria. The
accumulation of three demerits will result in a 30 minute detention.
The accumulation of three detentions will result in a conference with the
student and his/her parents.
There will be incentives to encourage students to follow the classroom rules
and to
enhance outstanding student behavior.
Rewards:
1. Verbal Praise
2. Note to students
3. Note/Phone call to parents
4. Rewards given by the teacher to the whole class for behavior and
teamwork.
Please ask your child to review this classroom plan with you, and then sign
and return the form below. We look forward to an exciting 5th grade
year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Christensen
