Homework

Why do we assign homework?  We believe homework is important because it is a valuable tool in helping students make the most of their experience in school.  Homework helps reinforce what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits. Students are expected to fill out their assignment notebook every day.

When will homework be assigned?

  • Homework will be assigned daily in most subjects.
  • Students will have class time to begin working on assignments. There is a study hall at the end of the day and students are expected to work on their homework during that time. I do not allow students to read a book, draw, or play on the computer unless all of their homework has been completed.
  • Students will also be expected to complete the assigned number of accelerated reader points each quarter and should include reading time in their study plan each night.

Homework Musts:

  • Homework should be done in the same color pen for the entire assignment. (Pen is used for all subjects except Math)
  • Homework is done on loose leaf paper, not in a notebook unless assigned.
  • Students must use complete sentences at all times.
  • Students must take notes when they are given and should plan on using these notes when completing homework and class assignments.
  • If homework is not completed, a Homework Notice will be issued. The purpose of the notice is to inform parents of the missing work. Parents need to sign the notice and the student should return the notice and the missing assignment the next day. If the notice is not returned signed, a demerit will be issued. If the notice is returned signed but the assignment is not, a notice will be issued every day until the work is turned in.

DISCIPLINE PLAN

IMPORTANT
PLEASE READ

We are delighted that your child will be in our class this year.  With your encouragement, your child will be a part of many exciting and rewarding experiences this academic year.

Since lifelong success depends in part on self-discipline, we have developed a Classroom Discipline Plan which affords every student guidance in making good decisions about their behavior and thus an opportunity to learn in a positive, nurturing class environment.  Your child deserves the most positive educational climate possible for his/her growth, and we know that, together, we will make a difference in this process.  The plan below outlines our classroom rules, possible rewards and consequences for appropriate and inappropriate behavior.

Classroom Rules:

1.  Respect the rights of others by talking one at a time and raising hands to speak.
2.  Be prepared for class by arriving on time with supplies.
3.  Assignments must be completed on time. (See homework policy)
4.    Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
5.    Listen carefully and follow directions.
6.  Be honest, use manners, and always do your best.

Playground Rules:

1.    No rough, physical contact.
2.    Play in designated areas only, following directions of supervisors.
3.    Do not play games that are dangerous.
4.    Throw nothing on the playground except authorized playground equipment designated to be thrown.

If a student chooses to break a rule, the following steps will be taken:
1st consequence:  Child’s name on the board (warning).
2nd consequence: One check mark after name, resulting in a demerit being issued.
3rd consequence:  Two check marks after name, resulting in a 15 minute detention.

An immediate demerit will be issued to any student who causes a severe disruption or shows inappropriate behavior in the classroom.  Demerits will be issued for inappropriate behavior on the playground or in the cafeteria.  The accumulation of three demerits will result in a 30 minute detention.  The accumulation of three detentions will result in a conference with the student and his/her parents.

There will be incentives to encourage students to follow the classroom rules and to
enhance outstanding student behavior.

Rewards:
1.  Verbal Praise
2.  Note to students
3.  Note/Phone call to parents
4.  Rewards given by the teacher to the whole class for behavior and teamwork.
