Grade 3 Curriculum
Snapshot
- Begin “part-singing” using vocal ostinati, rounds and partner songs
- Sight-read simple melodies and rhythms
- Study the orchestral “greats” of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Bach and Tchaikovsky
- Begin folk-dancing (play-parties, English and American country dances)
- Explore the instruments in the orchestra in relation to their "families"
of sound
production
- Children’s Choir begins in 3rd Grade
Grade 4 Curriculum Snapshot
- Extend vocal
skills to include partner-songs, three and four part canons, and harmonizing
in 3rds.
- Begin recorder
playing as a tool for sight-reading mastery and for ensemble work.
- Explore
musical styles of various cultures (Caribbean, west Africa, east Asia,
western
Europe) through singing, instrumental performance, listening,
improvisation
- Study the
symphony orchestra - its families, instruments, orchestral composers, and
repertoire. Attend RSO Youth
concert
- Jr. Choir
begins in Grade 4 - meets twice weekly This choir sings monthly
at the
4:30 Mass in Church. They also join the Cantor to lead the singing
at major
holy
days celebrated with the student body (e.g. All Saints Day, Immaculate
Conception,
Ash Wednesday, etc.)
Grade 5 Curriculum
Snapshot
- Recorder performance
as a solo instrument and in Orff ensemble work
- Study the syncopated
and uneven rhythms of African/
Latin
American music through listening, improvisation and performance
- Continue vocal
and choral development through liturgical,
folk and
concert performance (using vocal ostinati, canons, descants and part-singing)
- Study contemporary
composers, their works and attend RSO Youth Symphony
- Explore
the music of the American Civil War or the Middle Ages as reflective of the
history of the times
- Jr. Choir continues
in 5th grade; singers are introduced to solo cantoring at the 4:30
