Kindergarten Curriculum Snapshot

• Develop vocal skills by listening and singing
  
• Experience the basic music concepts of melody, rhythm (beat, meter and duration), form, timbre and expression (tempo and dynamics) through singing, moving, listening, playing instruments and creating (improvisation)
• Introduce "iconic" reading - simple symbols that illustrate melodic and rhythmic movement
• Introduce liturgical music by singing short responses (e.g. gospel acclamations, responsorial psalms, hymn refrains and short children's worship music)
• Introduce a variety of musical genres - marches, dance music, children's folk and classical music

• Refine “on pitch” singing; increase vocal range
• Explore melody, rhythm, texture, form and timbre by  singing, moving, instrumental playing and creating
• Move from iconic to traditional notational “reading”
• Explore timbre (tone color) through listening to instrumental/orchestral music - introduce the "families" of orchestral sounds
• Introduce common worship music at “Liturgical Sing”

• Expand the range and quality of the singing voice 
• Accompany simple melodies with body percussion, movement  and playing instruments
• Build music staff reading skills (melody and rhythm)
  
• Explore the expressive qualities of music (dynamics, tempo and timbre) through selected listening experiences (classical "story" music)
  
• Introduce the liturgical symbols, scripture readings and music for First Reconciliation and First Communion
