Reading
Our literature based basal reading series, published by McGraw Hill, is
filled with many award winning authors' and illustrators' works. In addition to this series, each semester the third graders will read a
trade book by Beverly
Cleary. Henry Huggins will be read first semester followed
by Ramona Quimby, Age 8 second semester. The children enjoy
reading these "chapter books" together! While reading these Cleary
books, we will continue working with new vocabulary words, comprehension
skills and language/ phonic development.
The students will be expected to read Accelerated Reader books throughout the entire year. In order to receive the points for each test, the student must receive an 80% or above. AR tests with a grade lower than 80% cannot be accepted. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves with books that will make them think, yet will not be too difficult or discouraging. The students may take their AR tests in the classroom during work/study time.
Each student has a quarterly goal for Accelerated Reader:
- 1st
quarter: 2 points
- 2nd
quarter: 4 points
- 3rd
quarter: 6 points
- 4th
quarter: 8 points
These
books can be checked out of the school library. Below is a link to the
Accelerated Reader list so you can check these books out from the public
library or use books from home. Have fun reading!
