Reading
Reading will consist mostly of reading short stories
and articles out of the reading textbook which contains both fiction and
nonfiction selections. As we read, we will be work on comprehension
skills, vocabulary enrichment, spelling, and reading fluency. The students
will learn and apply strategies to help with comprehension A
new skill that will be introduced and focused on will be making inferences/drawing
conclusions. You will find that this concept is one that is abstract,
not concrete and challenging for the students, but one that will be frequently
used (especially in science) and in their future schooling and everyday life.
In addition to the reading textbook, we will be reading
two novels together: Jacob's Rescue by Malka Drucker and Michael
Halperin and Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien.
We will continue to work on comprehension, vocabulary, etc. as we enjoy these
wonderful stories together. Students will be responsible for supplying
their own copy of each book. Students will also be required to read and pass quizzes
accumulating a minimum of six points each quarter. For a list of accelerated
